Zeinert, defense lead Yoe to win over Blackcats

Yoemen quarterback Zane Zeinert threw a pair of touchdown passes and rushed for another touchdown to carry the Yoemen (1-0) to a 21-16 victory over the Mexia Blackats (0-1) on Friday night in Mexia.

The young Yoe defense also had an outstanding fourth quarter, holding the Mexia offense from scoring to win the game.

The Yoemen started off the game with a good drive down the field, but Mexia intercepted the ball and returned it 38 yards to set up for a 23-yard field goal to put Mexia on the board first with seven minutes to go in the first quarter.

It was all Yoemen in the second quarter when Zeinert completed a 6-yard touchdown run to give the Yoemen a 7-3 lead.

Freshman Kason Goolsby caught 20-yard touchdown pass with 2:59 left to give Cameron a 14-3 lead, and senior Zakorien Spikes hauled in a 67-yard toss with 1:04 left in the half to put the Yoemen up 21-3.

The second half saw Mexia try to catch up with the Yoemen.

The Blackats came up with two big strikes of their own in the third.

Trey Holdman caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Lemarion Millar in the third quarter, and Holdman dashed 76 yards with 10:35 left in the fourth quarter to pull Mexia within five.

But the Blackcats couldn’t get within a field goal as Cameron’s defense stopped the two-point conversion.

The defense, lead by senior Eduardo Gil who had 12 tackles with two for a loss, forced the game’s two turnovers and held Mexia to 211 yards and just one completion — the TD.

The Yoemen passed for 210 yards with Zeinert completing 9 of 18 passes. The Yoemen also averaged 42 yards on four punts.

Yoe Coach Tommy Brashear credited Gil and Spikes as the players of the game for this week.

Cameron will host Bellville Friday at Yoe Field for the home opener. It will be Senior Parent Night.
