Yoemen top Rogers in district opener
The Yoemen began district play on Tuesday, March 15, when they traveled to Rogers to take on the Eagles. Cameron would handily defeat Rogers 13-2 in six innings.
Rogers started the scoring in the first inning with two runs. The Yoemen responded with four runs in the second inning and never looked back. Cameron scored their first two runs due to fielding errors by Rogers then Ryan Host singled on a line drive to right field, scoring two runs. Cameron would go on to score one run in the third inning, three in the fifth inning, and five in the sixth inning to activate the ten run rule and finish the game in six innings. Cameron collected 10 total hits in the game.
Ryan Host was incredible as he led the team with three hits, two walks, and five RBIs. Landen Greene got the win on the mound for Cameron. The righty allowed two hits and two runs over six innings, striking out three.
The Yoemen participated in a tournament last weekend hosted by Franklin. The Yoemen had a good amount of success in the tournament, finishing with a record of 3-1.
They played two games on Thursday March 9; the first game was against the Lampasas Badgers, and Cameron won 8-5. The Yoemen got things started in the first inning, scoring four runs. Cameron got on the scoreboard when Marino Cardona to hit into a fielder’s choice out, scoring one run.
That would be followed up with consecutive RBI singles from Armando Reyes and Dillan Akin to go ahead 4-0. The Yoemen continued to perform on offense to take an 8-0 lead. Cameron had a rough sixth inning and coughed up five runs, but Cameron still buckled down and won 8-5. Cameron saw the ball well, racking up seven hits in the game. Ryan Host and Armando Reyes both collected multiple hits for Cameron. Yovanni Cerros took the mound for the Yoemen. He allowed five hits and four runs over five and a third innings, striking out five.
The second game on Thursday for the Yoemen would be against the Centerville Tigers. Cameron shut out the Tigers, winning 3-0. The Yoemen got things moving in the first inning, when Ryan Host came home from third base to score on a passed ball. They would score another run when Xavier Gillmon came home to score on an error by the Centerville third baseman, and another run in the sixth inning on a single by Marino Cardona. Ryan Host was the pitcher and was credited with the victory for Cameron. The righty lasted all seven innings, allowing two hits and zero runs while striking out six and walking one.
The Yoemen came back to play two more games on Saturday March 11. The first game was against the Caldwell Hornets, and Cameron won 6-4. Caldwell fired up the offense in the first inning, scoring three runs. The Yoemen answered back with four runs in the second inning, aided with Ryan Host doubling on a line drive to right field, scoring two runs. Ryan Host, Armando Reyes, Braylan Drake, Logan Akin, Landen Greene, and Kason Goolsby each collected one hit to lead the team. Braylan Drake was the winning pitcher for the Yoemen. The righthander allowed eight hits and four runs over five and two-thirds innings, striking out five. Logan Akin threw one-third of an inning in relief out of the bullpen. He recorded the last out to earn the save for Cameron.
The final game in the tournament for the Yoemen was against the New Waverly Bulldogs, and Cameron would fall 2-1. Logan Akin led things off on the mound for Cameron. The lefty went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out two and walking zero.
Up next for the Yoemen will be a road matchup against the Lorena Leopards. The game will be Friday, March 17, and first pitch is set for 7 p.m.
