Yoemen get first district loss to Academy

The Yoemen moved to 5-1 in district play after two wins and a their first district loss over the last two weeks.

The Yoemen soundly defeated the Caldwell Hornets 70-45 on Jan. 11. This improved their district record to 4-0 and their overall record to 17-5. 

On Friday, the Yoemen headed on the road to battle the Academy Bumblebees for the top spot in the district standings. Though the Yoemen fought hard, they were defeated by the Bumblebees 67-59.  On Tuesday night they defeated Florence 89-61. 

The Bumblebees got off to a 6-0 start. The scoring for Cameron started with a three pointer by J.W. Hollas (3) for a 6-3 deficit. Later in the quarter, Cameron continued to fight and scored on a basket by Charlie Mayer (22) making the score 12-9. The first quarter ended with the Yoemen trailing Academy 15-11. The scoring in the second quarter started with a layup by Nolan Brashear (2) for a 15-13 game. The Yoemen took the lead on basket by Hollas 17-15, but the Bumblebees shortly took the lead right back. Cameron continued to battle getting a layup by Pharrell Hemphill (4) for a score of 29-26. Halftime ended with Cameron trailing the Bumblebees 38-30.

To start the third quarter, the Yoemen got right back in the game with a three pointer by Brashear that was followed by a slam dunk by Hemphill for a 38-36 score. Academy went on a run but Cameron answered with a layup by Brashear for a 44-40 deficit. The Yoemen would stay in the game with a floater by Kason Goolsby (1) to make the score 48-46. The third quarter ended with Academy slightly ahead of Cameron 50-46. 

The fourth quarter remained close. Cameron cut into the Bumblebee lead with a layup by Javoun Goldsby (11) to make the score 60-54, which was later followed by another fast break layup by Goldsby for a 60-58 game. It would not be enough as Academy began to pull away at the end on some questionable calls down the stretch by the officials and defeated Cameron 67-59. 

After this game, the Yoemen headed out on the road on Friday to take on the Florence Buffaloes. They took care of business and defeated Florence 89-61. 

Javoun Goldsby scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds. Nolan Brashear scored 19 points and had 9 rebounds. Phaibian Bynaum was amazing with 32 points and 14 rebounds. 

Cameron will not be playing on Friday as it will be a bye week.
