Yoemen begin season with Marion Tournament, set to host this weekend

The Yoemen ended last weekend’s Marion Tournament with a victory over the host team, but dropped the rest of tournament play. The Yoemen easily dispatched the Marion Bulldogs Varsity 9-2 on Saturday, Feb. 23. In the first inning, the Yoemen got their offense started when Luke Greene drew a walk, scoring one run. They would score three runs in the third inning led by Kadrian Hammond and Aaron Gutierrez, all driving in runs in the inning. Anthony Layne was credited with the victory for the Yoemen. He surrendered two runs on six hits over five innings, striking out three. Layne led the Yoemen with two hits in three at bats. The Yoemen dropped a close one to La Vernia 2-1 on Friday in tournament play. The Yoemen stayed in the game tied at one until the fifth inning when La Vernia’s East Parrish singled on a 3-1 count, scoring one run. The pitching was strong on both sides. La Vernia pitchers struck out 12, the Yoemen sat down seven. La Vernia got things started in the first inning when Parrish doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run. The Yoemen evened things up at one in the top of the second inning when Juan Carlos Cardona singled on a 3-2. Jason Llanas took the loss for Yoemen. He allowed seven hits and two runs over five innings, striking out seven and walking one. Cardona and Llanas each managed one hit to lead the Yoemen. The Yoemen also fell to Devine 7-3 on Friday. Devine got things moving in the first inning. Alex Alonso threw a wild pitch allowing one run across the plate for Devine. The Yoemen knotted the game up at one in the bottom of the first inning when they scored one run when Heath Hollas singled. Devine pulled away for good with two runs in the third inning. In the third Chad Lawson singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run and Truett Barron singled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run. Devine scored three runs in the fourth inning. Devine scored its runs on a home run by Isaiah Oropeza. Oropeza earned the victory on the mound for Devine. He surrendered three runs on five hits over four innings, striking out three. Gehrig Runyan threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Alonso took the loss for the Yoemen. He allowed six hits and three runs over two and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking zero. Jale Walzel led the Yoemen with two hits in two at bats. Devine racked up ten hits in the game. Oropeza and Newt Crouch each racked up multiple hits for Devine. Oropeza went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Devine in hits. Devine didn’t commit a single error in the field. Lawson had six chances in the field, the most on the team. Even though the Yoemen collected nine hits to Lago Vista’s five, they still fell to Lago Vista 7-1 on Friday. The Yoemen struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Lago Vista, giving up seven runs. Brannon McCall took the loss for the Yoemen. He allowed four hits and seven runs over two and a third innings, striking out three. The Yoemen racked up nine hits. Anthony Layne, Jason Llanas and Luke Greene all managed multiple hits for the Yoemen. Greene, Llanas and Layne each collected two hits to lead the Yoemen. The Yoemen will be back home beginning today hosting the Cameron-Rogers Varsity Tournament through Saturday.
