Lady Yoe soccer team looking to expand on 2021 playoff season

Last year, the Cameron Lady Yoe soccer team made it to the area round of the playoffs last season. They defeated the Sealy Lady Tigers in the first round 2-0, then lost to the Lorena Lady Leopards 2-1 in a heartbreaking game.

Coming into this season, Coach Laura Dickson believes her team this year has progressed and likes what she sees in the scrimmages early on and shows promise to not just make it back to the playoffs, but to advance even further this season.

“The girls are working really hard to improve upon where we were last year,” Coach Dickson said. “We had a really great showing at our first couple of scrimmages, and I feel we are ahead of where we were at this point last season. The girls have already spoken about not being satisfied and to improve as a team.”

A big help for the Lady Yoe is they will have 15 returning players with varsity experience on the roster for this year, they also have a total of 11 seniors this season. In Coach Dickson’s eyes, their experience and leadership has already proven to have a major impact on the season so far.

“I am very excited for this year,” Dickson said. “We only graduated a couple of starters from last season, so we have experienced returners in most positions.”

This year will also feel like a return to normal as last year was plagued with the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Dickson feels it did not affect her and her team as much as the indoor sports were affected. They are now able to just focus on the season ahead.

“Being an outside sport, we weren’t as negatively impacted by COVID as indoor sports,” she said. “There is a bit more normalcy in not having to wear masks, but that is about the extent of what affected us last season.”

The Lady Yoe have now finished up the scrimmage portion of their schedule, as they hosted games La Vega and Academy, in addition to the scrimmages in Belton and Lorena. The team is now locked, loaded and ready to kick off the regular season.

Their first matchup of the year will be on Tuesday, Jan. 4, as they will head out to Jarrell to take on the Lady Cougars. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
