Lady Dogs take down North Zulch in Dickerson’s 500th win

It was a big win for the Thorndale Lady Dogs (20-9) on Tuesday night at Bryan Rudder High School and not just it because it was the playoffs.  Their 62-44 bi-district over North Zulch was the 500th career for Lady Dogs head coach Bradley Dickerson.

The victory advances Thorndale to the area round, where they are to play Harper on Friday at Marble Falls. Time for the game was not finalized before Champion press time.

Harper, runner-up in District 28-2A, defeated La Pryor 69-23 in its bi-district round game.

Thorndale is the district champion of 25-2A, the third league title in a row for the Lady Dogs.

Tuesday night’s game against North Zulch, the fourth place team from 26-2A, saw Thorndale get into foul trouble a little early. Great work from the reserves and capitalizing on North Zulch turnovers helped to push Thorndale to get the win.

The game was knotted at 10-10 after the first quarter, with the Lady Dogs pushing ahead 27-20 by halftime.

The Lady Dogs tightened up their defense, forcing North Zulch turnovers and also getting them in foul trouble in the second half with Thorndale’s aggressive play in the paint.

North Zulch also struggled with shots falling when they needed them.

Thorndale outscored North Zulch 18-8 in the final quarter.

Makayla Lafferty led all scorers with 16 points and Savana Taylor put up 12.  Ashley Pesl also scored in double digits with 10 points.

Kyndal Robinson recorded eight points, with Kiera Rash and Bailee Baker putting up five points apiece.  Riley Calk and Kelsey Kovar scored two points each and Abby Dickerson scored one.

Coach Dickerson has spent all but one of his years as a head basketball coach in Thorndale.  That was his first when he was the boys head coach at Holland.
