Yoemen get wins over Mumford, Rogers
The Cameron Yoemen basketball team got two big wins this week.
They hosted the Mumford Mustangs on Friday. They were victorious, winning 70-66. Up next they went on the road to face the Rogers Eagles for their district opener, and would come out on top, winning 65-56.
The Yoemen started out fast with a layup by J.W. Hollas (3) to take a quick 7-3 lead. The Yoemen would add on with a three pointer by Connor Barton (15) to make the score 14-5. Cameron increased their lead to 19-10 on a layup by Trayjen Wilcox (12). Rogers then went on a 7-0 run to close the gap to 19-17, which would be the score at the end of the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Cameron lost the lead 20-19, but took it right back with a basket by Charlie Mayer (4) to make the score 21-20. That was followed with a fastbreak layup by Wilcox for a 23-20 lead. The Yoemen lead expanded to 28-20, and Cameron went into halftime winning 30-25.
The third quarter started with a three pointer by Barton to make it a 33-25 lead. Rogers tried to come back but the Yoemen responded with a three point shot by Wilcox to stay ahead 40-33, which would be followed up with another three pointer from Hollas for double digit 43-33 lead. Cameron expanded their lead to 49-36, and ended the third quarter with Cameron ahead 54-36 after a buzzer beating three pointer by Damon Flemings (2).
The Yoemen opened the fourth quarter with a three pointer by Wilcox to take a commanding 57-36 lead. Rogers clawed their way back to tighten the score 60-50. Cameron was able to stop their momentum with a layup by Mayer for a 62-52 lead. The Yoemen went on to win over Rogers 65-56.
Up next for the Yoemen, they will be competing in the MT Rice tournament located at Waco Midway High School. Information regarding their matchups is yet to be announced.
