Voters to decide city council spots, Cameron ISD bond Saturday

Early voting continues in school and city elections as well as a state constitutional amendment election.

The Milam County Elections Department said 1,421 people have cast ballots in the statewide Constitutional Amendment Election and various local civic and school elections as of Tuesday.

Election Day voting will be at Yoe High, Buckholts Community Center, Rockdale Hospital, and Thorndale VFW.

There are two proposals to the Constitution. Proposition 1 seeks to allow the state legislature to reduce the limit on the taxes that may be proposed for public school purposes on an elderly or disabled homeowner. Proposition 2 would raise the tax exemption homeowners can take on their public school taxes from $25,000 to $40,000.

There are several local elections on the ballot for Milam county voters.

Bartlett ISD voters will choose sides on a $20 million bond proposition and Cameron ISD voters will vote on a $15.9 million bond proposal.

Cameron ISD voters will decide on a $15.9 million bond issue to renovate Yoe High into a Career and Technology Center and upgrade the district’s Ag facilities.

This bond proposes transforming the original C.H. Yoe high school into a College and Career & Technical Education Center. The renovated facility would be a functional part of Yoe High School. Renovations to the building would repair or replace infrastructure, enhance safety, and integrate the C.H. Yoe legacy with a 21st Century educational experience. The building would become home to modern and future-ready Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, adapting each space to fit the needs of each program. The programs to be housed in the original C.H. Yoe Building are:

• Health Sciences

• Computer Science

• Business Education

• Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement

• Future Teacher Education

• Dual Credit (College Courses w/ Temple College)

This bond also proposes renovations to district Ag Facilities to improve roofing, accessibility, and safety and to equip them for additional CTE programs. The programs to be housed in the Ag Facilities are:

• Welding

• Floral Lab

• Veterinary Technician

The renovated original C.H. Yoe High School Building and Ag Facilities are envisioned to provide every student that attends C.H. Yoe High School a hands-on learning experience that will ensure career and post-secondary success.

In Cameron, voters will also decide between incumbent Ward 4 councilmember Lekethia Keke Sims and opponent Jimmy Pratt.

Thorndale City Council has three spots up for grabs from among a group of Wayne Green, Allen Hejl, Steven Zuehlke, and Marla Davis.

Primary Runoff Elections are set for May 24. Early voting in the Primary Runoff will begin May 16 and run through May 20. Election Day will be May 24.

Voters will decide between James Denman and Doug Baker for Precinct 2 Milam County Commissioner and between Stan Gerdes and Paul Pape for District 17 State Representative in the election.
