COVID UPDATE: COVID numbers back on the rise
COVID-19 cases are back on the rise in Milam County and across the state.
Another death was reported on Tuesday, bringing the county’s death toll to 53.
“Our case counts are up and continue on an upward spiral,” Milam County Judge Steve Young said on Tuesday. “Today we have 33 active cases to report. In early July 2021 we were at a low of six cases. The increase is probably due to the gatherings of June 19 and July 4. But, it is also due to the new variants in the county. The Delta variant is 50 percent more transmittable than the original virus.”
There are seven people currently hospitalized with one on a ventilator.
The county is continuing vaccination clinics and will begin free testing again next week.
“Since Jan. 1, 2021, the vaccine has been available and Milam County government has done just about everything we can to get anyone in the county who wants to get vaccinated, vaccinated,” Young said. “This is a health and safety issue for every resident in this county as the virus affects all of us in many ways. We are vaccinating and we are testing. If you know someone who wants to get vaccinated, be sure and let them know that we are vaccinating the rest of the week as set forth below. Remember that a fully vaccinated person is less likely to get seriously ill from a potential infection and is much less likely to spread the virus.”
Milam County Health Department will hold free COVID-19 vaccination clinics on: July 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Milano VFD, 305 E US 79; July 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Davilla Community Center, 20803 FM 487; July 31 from 9 a.m. to noon at Rockdale Clinic, 1700 Brazos Ave. and from 1-4 p.m. at Cameron Health Department, 209 S. Houston.

The Bell County Public Health District announced Tuesday that they have increased the COVID threat level from level 3 (moderate) to level 2 (significant) as cases and hospitalizations across the county continue to climb.
Milam County is included in the same Trauma Services District with Bell County, along with Coryell, Hamilton, Lampasas and Mills counties.
Young said that Milam County is the second most vaccinated county in our area only behind Lampasas County with a little over 37 percent of residents vaccinated.
