Yoemen defeat Caldwell on Senior Night
The Cameron Yoemen boy’s basketball team defeated the Caldwell Hornets in an epic final home game on Tuesday 73-62.
This game was Senior Night, so before the game, Coach Chris Reid hosted a last game ceremony for his six seniors with a nice tribute to: Zakorien Spikes, Ke’Vaughn Booze, Brent Wright, Trenton Nix, Kaleb Burks, and Azi Haynes. Each of them received their own special introduction and a group picture was taken with them all together. It was a magnificent and honorable sendoff for them.
The Yoemen started off the game with a three-point opportunity by Zakorien Spikes (1), but he unfortunately missed the free throw to complete the three-point play.
After that, Caldwell went on a 9-2 run, putting the Yoemen in a bad position. Kaleb Burks (32) ended Caldwell’s run with a three-point shot. Even with that make by Burks, Cameron still struggled a little bit on offense. At the end of the first quarter, the Yoemen trailed 19-11.
Offensive struggles continued into the second quarter for the Yoemen. Eventually Cameron turned it around and started to pick up the pace and they played the last half of the second quarter, having more success with their half-court offense, including three terrific clutch three-pointers from Javoun Goldsby (11). Cameron did not retake the lead but showed a great deal of promise to be able to do it in the second half. Cameron went into halftime trailing 33-29.
The Yoemen started the second half on a 5-2 start. They finally got their first lead of the half with a transition layup by Phaibian Bynaum (5) followed by a three-point opportunity by Nolan Brashear (2) and two free throws by Burks. That little spurt turned into an offensive barrage for the Yoemen. This included some more hot three-point shooting from Goldsby and Burks and solid play by Ke’Vaughn Booze (13).
The game midway through the third quarter became a Cameron blowout. In addition to their offense, Cameron played some great defense in the third quarter as they allowed only eight points in the entire third quarter. Offensive intensity continued in the fourth quarter, and their defense did not let up either, truly a complete game all around. Cameron ended the game with a decisive victory 73-62, extending their winning streak up to five games.
The Yoemen are now 8-2 in district play and their overall record is no
w 16-4, with this record they are still tied in second place with Rogers in the district standings. The next game for Cameron will be on the road against the Little River Academy Bumblebees. It will be on Friday, Feb. 5, and will tip off at 7:30 p.m.
