Candidates begin to file for council positions
Candidates are starting to fill the May ballot for Cameron City Council.
So far three people have filed to run in the election.
Incumbent Ward 3 Councilmember Kyle Deal has filed to remain in his seat on council.
Two people have filed to run for Councilmember At-Large, which is currently held by Melissa Williams. Assistant District Attorney Kyle Nuttall and local business owner Cliff Cryer will face each other for the spot.
The Cameron City Council ordered the election for May 1 during its meeting on Feb. 1.
Anyone wishing to file to run can contact City Hall at (254) 697-6466.
During the meeting the council also heard comments about rezoning an area of land near Sunset Circle from Industrial to Residential 2.
Several residents of the subdivision located on that street spoke asking council for the rezone.
The council tabled any decision on the request until they could discuss more and are expected to take action during their next meeting.
The council also heard from City Manager Rhett Parker and Cameron Industrial Foundation Director Ginger Watkins about a planned Grand Reopening of the Cameron Municipal Airport along with an Air Show on April 3.
Watkins said there are plans for the reopening along with an Air Show and several other events including food trucks and vendors in one of the hangars at the airport.
The airport will reopen $1.2 million in renovations that began in July 2020. The funds were used for planned airport improvements, which include pavement improvements. Project costs were funded through the City of Cameron and TxDOT’s Aviation Facilities Grant Program, which preserves and improves the state’s general aviation system.
