Holiday accidents take two lives

Two lives were claimed in vehicle accidents over the holiday weekend.

Yoe High graduate Danny Perez died in a rollover wreck on U.S. 77 on Thanksgiving day.

Perez, 21, of Rosebud, was not wearing his seatbelt.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said the single-vehicle wreck happened north of Cameron. Perez was driving a 2013 Dodge Avenger while traveling north on U.S. 77 when he failed to drive in a single lane, and left the roadway on the east side of US 77. The Dodge struck a private driveway and vaulted. The Dodge rolled over multiple times ejecting Perez.

Perez was pronounced deceased on scene by Justice of the Peace Gary Northcott.

A Travis County deputy died Friday in a motorcycle crash in rural Milam County.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers said Senior Deputy Robert "Drew" Small died in a two-vehicle accident about 10:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, on US 79 between Milano and Gause.

Investigators said Small was driving a motorcycle when he collided with another vehicle.

The 48-year-old Small was assigned to the Motors Unit and was off-duty at the time of the crash and driving home from Louisiana.

This marks the 12th death and 10th fatal crash on Milam County roadways this year.

One person was also flown to the hospital after a major crash outside of Cameron on Thanksgiving Day.

Cameron Volunteer Fire Department and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers responded about 1:40 p.m. Thursday to a two-vehicle crash in the 1800 block of FM 2269 near Marak.

Cameron Fire Chief Henry Horelica said it appeared a driver was preparing to turn left off FM 2269 onto CR 221 when the vehicle behind it attempted to pass on the left, striking the turning vehicle and sending both into the ditch.

The driver of the first car was air lifted from the scene with undisclosed injuries. Two units and 22 personnel responded. Crews were on scene nearly an hour and a half.

Cameron Volunteer Fire Department also spent much of their Thanksgiving holiday working traffic control after an early morning crash in town.

Crews responded about 4:15 a.m. Thursday to a one-vehicle crash at 4th and Travis in front of the Dairy Queen after a car ran off the road and knocked over a power pole. The crash downed a live powerline and blocked traffic. The driver was not hurt and is believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel.
