Yoemen fall to Troy in district opener

The Cameron Yoemen took their first loss of the season to District 10-3A foe Troy 59-41 Friday night.

Troy (4-1) forced turnovers on the Yoemen’s first three drives of the contest and jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter, forcing the Yoemen to play from behind all night.

Troy’s Sam Jones intercepted Braden Brashear’s second pass of the game to give the Trojans the ball at the Yoemen 20. Troy converted a fourth down to set up first-and-goal at the 5, and Zach Hrbacek ran it in for his first of four touchdowns.

Cameron’s following drive was cut short when James DeBose fumbled inside the Troy 20, and the Trojans turned it into points with a 36-yard field goal by Josh McKissick for a 10-0 lead.

The turnovers continued for the 3-1 Yoemen when Kobe Young fumbled on the first play of its third drive. Jones made it 17-0 on a 10-yard TD run with 2:22 left in the first quarter.

DeBose would score on an 18-yard run with 24 seconds left in the quarter for make it 17-7 going into the second quarter.

The Yoemen would match Troy’s scores throughout the second quarter, but couldn’t come back from the deficit in the second half of the game.

Troy’s Beau Workman would start the second quarter with a 69-yard pass from Ben Pressley. The Yoemen would answer with an 18-yard pass from Brashear to Young to make the score 24-14.

Hrbacek would then take it in for the score on a five-yard run.

Brashear answered with another pass to Young, this time from eight yards out to make the score 31-21. Troy would score again to end the quarter on a 55-yard run to the endzone from Jones.

The Yoemen were shut out in the third quarter, but Troy would score two more times.

The Yoemen ended the game with three scores in the fourth quarter. Troy would score one more, too.

Yoe running back Nico Vargas took it in on a 30-yard pass from Brashear to start the fourth quarter. He would have two more scores – an 11-yard run and a nine-yard run – to make the score 59-41 when the clock ran out.

Hrbacek ran for 238 yards. Presley threw for 157 yards.

Brashear tallied 279 yards passing and three touchdowns. Young finished with four catches for 59 yards. DeBose ran for 89 yards and Vargas totaled 92 yards from scrimmage and scored on runs of 11 and 9 yards and a 30-yard pass from Brashear.

The Yoemen are set for Katy St. John at Yoe Field Friday night beginning at 7:30 p.m.
