Tax Office reminds residents of tax deadlines
The Milam County Tax Assessor Collector Sherry Mueck would like to remind everyone that if you did not choose the half payment option to pay your 2018 taxes by Nov. 30, 2018, your 2018 taxes are due without penalty and interest on or before Jan. 31, 2019. Mueck said if you qualify for the quarter payment option, and you choose to pay in the four installments, your first quarter payment is due on or before Jan. 31, 2019. For the quarter payment options you must include tax statement stub with the option checked or you must send something in writing stating that you are choosing the quarter payment option. The Milam County Tax Office in Cameron and the Rockdale Substation will offer extended hours on Jan. 31. Cameron hours will be 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the Rockdale Substation will be 7:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mueck said forms of payment accepted by the Tax Office are cash, check, money order or credit/debit card. Please note that if you choose to pay with a credit/debit card the credit card processing company charges an additional 2.35 percent - this money goes to the processing company, not to the county, city, school or watersheds. We also accept U.S. postmark – not postage meter postmark. She said if you choose to mail in your payment please be aware that dropping payment in a mail box does not process a postmark and she suggests that you take your envelope into the post office and have them stamp the post mark date. She also reminds that the United States Postal Service will be increasing the cost of postage to 55 cents on Sunday, Jan. 27. The Cameron Tax Office also has a drop box for your convenience and they will accept payment in drop box through midnight on Jan. 31. Mueck said to be aware that they have two cameras at the drop box that have date and time stamps that will be used to process your payments.
