White, Torrey re-elected; run-off set for Precinct 1 Commissioner
Milam County voters chose to return several incumbents to office and put a new faces on the Commissioners Court during Super Tuesday voting.
County voters overwhelmingly re-elected Sheriff Chris White on the Republican side. He garnered 62.38 percent of the vote (2,575 votes). H.L. “Herbie” Vaughn took 19.14 percent of the vote (790 votes) and Craig Wise got 18.48 percent of the vote (763 votes). White doesn’t have a competitor in the general election in November.
In the race for County Attorney on the Republican side voters re-elected Bill Torrey to another term. He got 55.7 percent of the vote (2,271 votes) as compared to Lonnie Gosch’s 44.3 percent (1,806 votes). Torrey has no opponent in the general election in November.
Voters in Precinct 1 will have a run-off for Milam County Commissioner as nobody garnered 50 percent of the vote. Henry “Hub” Hubnik will face incumbent Richard “Opey” Watkins in the run-off in May. Hubnik garnered 48.9 percent of the vote (577 votes) to Watkins’ 38.64 percent (456 votes). Ricky McCall got 12.46 percent of the vote (147 votes).
Arthur Neal will replace incumbent Precinct 3 Commissioner John Fisher next year. Neal garnered 59.11 percent of the vote (743 votes) to defeat Frank Summers and Charles E. Truitt. Summers received 32.38 percent of the vote (407 votes) and Truitt received 8.51 percent of the vote (107 votes).
Neither commissioner’s candidate, both Republicans, will face an opponent in November.
James Pratt won the election for Precinct 1 Constable on the Republican ticket. Pratt got 68.85 percent of the vote (767 votes) to Pat Guffey’s 31.15 percent (347 votes).
In national elections Texas voters voted for Joe Biden to face President Donald J. Trump in November. Biden garnered 34 percent of the vote in the Democratic Primary. Bernie Sanders had 30 percent of the vote at press time. Trump got 96 percent of the vote in Texas.
Texas Republicans overwhelmingly voted for John Cornyn in the Republican primary for U.S. Senator. He got 76 percent of the vote across the state.
On the Democratic side Mary “MJ” Hegar will face off with someone in a run-off. She garnered 23 percent of the vote in a field of 12 candidates. Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez and Royce West were jockeying for the No. 2 spot at 13.7 percent and 13.6 percent.
In the race for District 17 to replace incumbent U.S. Rep. Bill Flores, there will be a run-off in May between Pete Sessions and Renee Swann. Sessions got 32 percent of the vote and Swann got 19 percent of the vote in the crowded field on the Republican side.
On the Democratic side Rick Kennedy will face David Jaramillo in the May run-off. Kennedy got 48 percent of the vote to Jaramillo’s 35 percent.
