Scams target county residents

Milam County residents are asked to be careful when answering phone calls as two scams are currently going around the county.

Milam County Sheriff Chris White last week warned residents to not believe any person who calls advising that they are a Milam County Sheriff’s Deputy wanting to obtain money for a failure to appear for Grand Jury or jury. He said a subject recently contacted a Cameron resident advising he was Deputy Mike Clore and stated that he would be getting a warrant for failing to appear for Grand Jury and that if the subject did not pay the fine he would be going to jail.

He instructed the resident to obtain a money card, load money on the card and then give him the PIN off the card in order for the fine to be paid. Cameron Fire Chief Henry Horelica is also advising residents that the Cameron Fire Department will never call asking for donations.

“The Cameron VFD has had reports coming in that a scammer is calling city/county residents portraying themselves as a Cameron firefighter asking for donations,” he said “We would like to make it clear none of our department members will ever call and solicit for donations. Also no other fire department in Milam County will call and solicit donations.”
