Rockdale wildfire contained

A wildfire that consumed over 100 acres in a couple of days around Rockdale is now fully contained. 

The Texas A&M Forest Services said Wednesday that the Right of Way Fire is now 100 percent contained and all state resources dealing with the fire have been released. Officials said the fire, which burned 106.8 acres, is now back under the control and purview of local fire units. 

That blaze sparked about midnight Saturday on US 77 off CR 313A. After spending about six hours fighting the fire, it sparked up again Saturday afternoon and nearly doubled in size. Crews would spend another seven hours dealing with the blaze Saturday afternoon. 

The Texas A&M Forest Service continued with mop up operations for several days afterward. Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department battled the blaze with assistance from Tanglewood, Minerva, Cameron, Thorndale, Lexington, Rosebud, and Milano. The Texas A&M Forest Service and Mine Services also assisted with heavy equipment and strike teams. 

No structures were ever threatened and the fire mostly consumed trees and heavy brush. 

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
