New burn ban in effect after weekend fires

Milam County has placed a new burn ban effective at 12:01 p.m., Friday, Oct. 7, after weekend fires. 

The Cameron Volunteer Fire Department responded just before 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, to reports of a fast moving hay field fire on S. Highway 36 outside of Cameron. 

Fire Captain Phillip Dohnalik said crews arrived to find three acres burning and six round bales. The blaze was extinguished with assistance from Milano Volunteer Fire Department.

About an hour later, the Fire Department responded to a hay field fire on FM 485 at CR 140 in Silver City. 

Dohnalik said crews arrived to find about two acres burned, though the fire had spread to about 85 round bales. 

The fire was emitting a lot of smoke across CR140, so officials elected to close that road. Rosebud Volunteer Fire Department responded for mutual aid. 

Also responding were Milam County deputies, State Troopers, the Game Warden, and Precinct 2 personnel. 

Dohnalik indicated the round bales were likely to continue to burn for a few days.

 and could mean residents in town will smell the smoke from them.
