Milam County Livestock Auction destroyed in fire

A Milam County staple burned to the ground early Monday morning, July 6.

The Cameron Volunteer Fire Department responded about 1:30 a.m. Monday morning to a structure fire at Milam County Livestock Auction.

Crews arrived to find the auction barn fully engulfed and the roof beginning to cave in.

According to Fire Chief Henry Horelica the building is a total loss and nothing was left standing.

The building housed the auction ring, kitchen, and offices. There were no animals inside and there were no injuries.

A total of 24 personnel responded with five trucks. Crews cleared the scene after about three hours.

Horelica said the fire is likely electrical in nature.

In a Facebook post on Monday owner Kenny Mingus said, “We received a devastating call early this morning that our sale barn was on fire and our hearts are heavy as we try to process this tragic news.

We will not be able to conduct a sale this Friday, July 10. Please know that we are efficiently trying to figure out a temporary operating plan for the future.”
