Milam County announces changes to operations due to COVID-19

Milam County Judge Steve Young announced several changes to county operations on Monday afternoon in hopes to prevent the sprea of the COVID-19 virus in the county.

There are no reported cases of COVID-19 in Milam County at this time, but there have been two cases reported in Bell County and some in Travis County.

"We are taking precautionary measures in Milam County to prevent the spread of the virus," Young said. "There is no cure for the virus, so the best thing we can do is to prevent the spread. The prevent the spread we must avoid social contact, such as attending large gatherings."

The County will curtail many of the services we provide to avoid such contact and the spread of the disease as follows:
1. The District Court and the County Court will close at the end of business on Tuesday, March 17, for at least one week.
2. The District Clerk’s office will close with the Courts on Tuesday for at least one week.
3. The County Clerk’s office and the Tax Assessor/Collectors office will close today. However, there will be a skeletal crew on hand. If you need service call the main number 254 697 7000.
4. The Adult and Juvenile Probation offices will close today as well. We will go forward with probation hearings tomorrow, but no other probation services thereafter.
5. The Milam County District Attorney’s office will remain open with a skeletal crew.
6. The Milam County Veteran’s Assistance office will close today.
7. The Milam Appraisal Office will close today. However, one can call their office for assistance and a skeletal crew will be on hand to assist.

12. The Milam County Medical Department will remain open as usual.

"We are taking these measures in an abundance of caution to prevent any potential spread of the virus," Young said.  "We are in contact with the Governor’s office and others daily and we will re-evaluate the situation daily. There is no need for panic, as these are temporary measures. We will get through this, just like we have gotten through other crises."
