Deadly week on Milam County roadways

Two different fatality accidents took the lives of three people on Milam County roadways over the last week.

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Bryan Washko said Juan Alfredo Vazquez-Quevedo of Bryan died in a crash of Friday afternoon in Milano. An unidentified passenger in his vehicle also died.

That crash happened just before 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4,  on US 79 about 2.5 miles west of Milano.

Investigators determined a westbound 2023 GMC Acadia SUV driven by Sean Daniel Ocasio-Hogue of Florida approached a right curve on US 79 when it entered the curve and for unknown reasons continued straight and crossed the center line, colliding with an eastbound 2008 Honda Fit passenger car driven by Vazquez-Quevedo.

The driver and passenger in the Honda were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Ocasio-Hogue was rushed to the hospital. There was no update on his condition.

The crash investigation is still active and open.

One person died after a major head-on collision Wednesday afternoon on a rural Milam County road.

Cameron Volunteer Fire Department responded just after 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, to the major 2-vehicle crash on FM 485 east near CR 260.

Washko said a 2014 Chevrolet Express van operated by 61-year-old Haider Ali Mamin of Sugar Land was eastbound on FM 485.

Investigators determined a 2017 Dodge Durango operated by a 19-year-old Hamilton man was westbound in the eastbound lanes as it approached the van. The van swerved to the left in order to avoid a collision, at which time the Dodge swerved right to return to the correct lane. Both units collided head-on in the westbound lane.

Mamin was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Gary Northcott.

The driver of the SUV had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life, which took over an hour. That driver was then airlifted to the hospital. A passenger in the van miraculously came away with almost no injuries.

Crews cleared the scene about 7 p.m.

The crash investigation is still active and open.

There have now been 12 deaths and nine fatal crashes on Milam County roads this year.
