COVID UPDATE: Fifth death recorded, county testing to begin Sept. 1
Milam County has recorded its fifth death due to COVID-19.
Milam County Judge Steve Young said Thursday night that the Texas Department of State Health Services reported the additional death.
"We presume this individual was a resident of the county but died outside the county and the death is just now being reported," he said. "We hope to get more details tomorrow."
There were five new confirmed cases to report in Milam County on Thursday and one individual was discharged from the hospital.
Young also announced that the county will begin its testing program on Sept. 1.
"We will begin free COVID rapid testing on Tuesday, Sept. 1," he said. "This will be a rapid test that will be performed in various locations around the county. We plan to have the results within the day of the test, if not sooner. A special thanks to our fire departments and to the Rockdale Hospital District for allowing us to use their facilities for testing. Danielle Janicek will be in charge of the actual testing and Michelle Morgan should be contacted if you have any questions about the administration of the program. At this point we have 200 tests which are expected to arrive in Cameron tomorrow. We have ordered an additional 2,000 tests and we are told that some of those will arrive next week. At this point we plan to test Milam County residents who have symptoms."
No appointment is necessary and those who come to the testing site will be required to provide a history to the nurse who will determine if the person has the necessary symptoms for testing.
If you have any questions about testing, please contact Michelle Morgan at (254) 627-9995 or mmorgan@milamcounty.net
