County honors Ken Janicek for 24 years of service

Milam County Commissioners recognized longtime Veterans Services Coordinator Ken Janicek during a meeting Monday for his service to the county.

Janicek has been with the county for 24 years and is set to retire March 31.

The court also heard an update on a visit from United States Senator John Cornyn last week from County Judge Steve Young.

Cornyn visited the county last week to discuss what is going on in Central Texas with Young and several other area County Judges. The group discussed many of the issues including drugs and crime, mental health and the best use of American Rescue Act funds (ARPA).

During the visit Cornyn toured the bitcoin mining operation at Whinstone and the new County Annex.

In other business commissioners also: heard a report regarding Silver Hair legislation and insurance coverages from the Texas Association of Counties; approved a mass gathering permit for the Burning Flipside Festival; deputized new Milam County Sheriff’s Deputy Keith Beasley; and approved May elections and an amendment between the Milam County Health Department and state reporting services for COVID-related death information.
