City council paves way for July 4th fireworks downtown, but no activities

Fourth of July fireworks will go on as planned in downtown Cameron.

The event, co-sponsored by the Cameron Chamber of Commerce and the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce each year, is set for Saturday, July 4, on the downtown square in Cameron.

The Cameron City Council approved the request for the event along with other Chamber events during a meeting on June 15. 

Chamber Director Melanie Reed was on hand to make the request and said that the event will only be fireworks this year due to COVID-19.

The event will be held downtown and she said all Cameron residents should be able to see the fireworks show from their homes. People can gather in their cars throughout downtown, but are asked to please remember to social distance and remain with their groups during the event.

Fireworks will be at dusk and will be shot off from the Oak Hill Cemetery parking lot.

The council also approved the Steak, Stein and Wine Festival for Oct. 24; Trunk or Treat Halloween on Oct. 31; and the Christmas Parade on Dec. 3.

Reed said plans for the events are up in the air at the moment, but the Chamber is making plans to proceed with the events, they will probably just look a little different.

The council also held several public hearings during the meeting.

They denied a request for goats at 907 West 22nd Street; approved a special use permit for a six foot side yard variance at 902 E. 13th Street; approved a request for horses at 610 North Columbus; and approved the final plat for the subdivision of the Llanas Addition at 1401 North Central Avenue. 

The council was expected to have a budget workshop during the meeting, but postponed it due to the financials not being ready to dive into during the workshop.

They council will meet again on July 6.
