Cameron Junior High evacuated for smoke

It turned out to be quite the exciting first day of school students at Cameron Junior HIgh.

Cameron Volunteer Fire Department responded just after 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 17, for reports of smoke filling the Cameron Junior High Cafeteria.

Cameron Fire Chief John Hillman said crews arrived to find a light haze inside the cafeteria and a funky smell. The entire campus was evacuated and all students and staff were out when the fire department arrived. Hillman said they checked the entire area and found no heat source or flames.

Investigators believe a fan belt burned up in a brand new AC unit that had been installed in the crawl space between the ceiling and the roof. It's believed that when the unit was turned on, it created the burning smell and haze.

There were no injuries reported.
