Aviation museum to make Cameron Municipal Airport home

Cameron will soon be home to a new aviation museum

The Cameron City Council approved moving forward with granting Dr. Richard Morgan and his wife Nanette space at the Cameron Municipal Airport to open a museum in the empty hangar at the airport.

The museum is a 501C3 tax-exempt organization that emphasizes educating young people about the responsibilities of freedom and our constitution and thanking our military. 

Morgan said the museum has been in existence since 2002 and they have put on several events but never had a place to call home.

“I hope that this will be an exciting and beneficial idea for Cameron,” he said. “Cameron has a facility that we can use and we think it can be a beautiful facility to house our museum.”

Morgan said the museum would renovate the hangar and bring the electrical systems up to code for a cost of about $50,000. The city will abate rent to the museum for that cost until that is paid up, then they will pay rent.

Morgan said the museum will open the city up to increased tourism from its patrons and more publicity for the airport.

“I think this is a win-win for the city,” Mayor Bill Harris said. “It is an opportunity for us to have something come in to improve our tourism, but it will also help to educate our children.”

In other business the council also: approved creating a reinvestment zone and tax abatement for Charlotte Pipe; and approved procuring grant administration for the Hazard Mitigation Grant and Building Resilience Infrastructure Grant.
