Events to commemorate 80th anniversary of D-Day

With the 80th anniversary of D-Day rapidly approaching on June 6 this year, Morgan Military Aviation Museum in Cameron just received a special vehicle that likely played an important part of the invasion of Hitler’s Europe and eventual Allied victory of World War II.

Morgan Military Aviation Museum is very excited and proud to have a newly restored 1944 Dodge WC-54 3/4-ton ambulance. The ambulance has spent the last four years undergoing a frame-up restoration which was done by Greg and John Hart of Gainesville.

The ambulance has a history of having been in the combat zones in the European theatre. Along with jeeps, tanks, artillery pieces, and many other types of equipment, many ambulances were off-loaded onto the beaches of Normandy, France, in the days following the June 6 invasion. Knowing these ambulances were close at hand to the front lines and staffed by good Army medics and Navy corpsmen was a huge comfort and morale booster to our troops and doubtless saved many lives.

Morgan Military Aviation Museum is new to Cameron and is located at the Cameron Airpark in the first large vintage hangar. The hangar is currently being renovated but has many items available to see.

The museum will be joining Old Town Cameron and Milam County Museum in celebrating D-Day this year. Morgan Military Museum will be open on June 7 and 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be lots to see and do and admission will be free. The museum will feature D-Day exhibits and art both days.

On Saturday, June 8, weather permitting, the American Legion will be presenting the colors at noon, while the museum’s trainers perform a flyover. Again, weather permitting, their aircraft will be flying and vehicles running from 10-11 a.m. and 2-3 p.m.

Plans are to offer jeep rides for a donation. There are also plans to have WW II re-enactors, displays and the souvenir/gift shop will be open. Water and soft drinks will be available for sale as well.

Morgan Military Museum is honored to join Old Town Cameron and the Milam County Museum in commemorating this historical turning point of WW II and honoring out nations veterans.
