Cameron City Council denies permits

The Cameron City Council denied a few special use permits and approved the purchase of lighting for downtown during a meeting Monday.

The council heard three public hearings for special use permits during the meeting.

They approved one and denied two of them.

The council approved a special use permit to place a HUD Code Manufactured Home at 908 West Main Street in Cameron.

The denied two other applications - one for a food business and one for an internet cafe/game room.

The first denial was to place a snow cone business at 707 West 8th Street in Cameron.

Council denied the application based on the fact that the business would be located in a residential district and due to the fact that taxes on the property were not paid as of meeting time on Monday. Council voted 4-2 to deny the permit.

The second denial was to place an internet cafe/game room at 412 West Batte Street in Cameron. 

Several people were at the meeting to speak against allowing this business to come in.

Mayor Nathan Fuchs commented that bringing a game room into the community on a special use permit basis is not something he would be for. Fuchs did not vote on the matter.

Council voted to deny the special use permit unanimously.

The council also approved the placement of solar powered string lights in the downtown mall by the Cameron Rotary Club.

The Rotary Club will purchase solar powered string lights to be placed downtown to give the area additional lighting. The funds for the lighting will come from the Rotary Club from fundraising and donors. The lights will be draped from tree to tree.

The council also approved the use of the Cameron Municipal Airpark for the 6th Annual Project Maynardstang Cruise-in on Sept. 28 from 4-7 p.m.

In other business council also approved the demolition of substandard structures are N. MLK Blvd., 904 W. 3 1/2 Street, and 808 N. Austin Avenue.
